Technology Innovator Joins Executive Leadership Team
Joseph Moreau, an experienced education technology leader, has joined the Foothill-De Anza Community College District as vice chancellor of technology. Moreau comes to the position from the State University of New York at Oswego, a four-year university where he served as chief technology officer.
A California native, Moreau worked in California community colleges for 18 years before taking the New York position in 2008.
"I could not be more excited about the opportunity to join such a dynamic and vibrant educational community," Moreau said. "I look forward to continuing the tradition of excellence and innovation already so well established at Foothill and De Anza."
District Chancellor Linda M. Thor said she is pleased to have Moreau on her team and expressed confidence in his vision and leadership skills to move the district forward. Moreau is credited with taking SUNY Oswego from "lagging to leading" with technology initiatives such as advancing cloud computing, deploying virtualized applications and improving information security.
"Joe's current and past supervisors as well as his colleagues describe him as a thoughtful, deliberate consensus builder who is straightforward and approachable," the chancellor said. "They report that he is curious and always looking for better ways to do things.''
Foothill-De Anza selected him for the vice chancellor position after a national search that attracted almost four-dozen applicants.
During his years in California community colleges, Moreau worked as dean of academic information services at Mira Costa College, dean of learning resources at West Hills College and as a supervisor in the instructional resources center at Pasadena City College. His service includes four years as president of the California Chief Information Systems Officers Association.
Known as an innovator, Moreau was honored by the California Community Colleges in 2004 with the Excellence in Technology Leadership Award. He also won the Creating the Future Award in 2001 and the Out-of-the-Box Thinkers Award in 1999, both from the Community College League of California.
He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of California, San Diego, and a master's degree in from California State University, Los Angeles.
Moreau reported to work on June 11 to collaborate with outgoing Vice Chancellor of Technology Fred Sherman for a smooth transition. Sherman, who served the district for six years, retired June 29.
Despite the current budget climate, Moreau said, "I am confident we can identify and implement creative technological solutions to sustain the core components of our mission - access and success for the students and communities we serve."
